Delay Performance Analysis of a Two-Stage Cross-Layer Scheduler for Wireless LANs

چکیده
The transport of real-time data flows over wireless channels can be optimized by cross-layer schedulers which serve the different users dependent on their traffic load and channel state. This paper investigates the delay performance of a two-stage cross-layer scheduler which has been designed to meet the above requirements. The well-known Weighted Fair Queuing Scheduler can tramsmit packets within a guaranteed delay that can be analytically determined, however the delay cannot be adjusted directly. The latter is possible with the scheduler discussed in this paper, where a transmission is performed in a stochastic way which means a certain percentage of the packet is lost, which is however often tolerable for applications such as video or VoIP. An analytical approach of the delay performance of the scheduler is given and validated by simulation results.

Achieving proportional delay differentiation in wireless LAN via cross-layer scheduling
Providing service differentiation in wireless networks has attracted much attention in recent research. Existing studies so far have focused on the design of differentiated media access algorithms. Some quality of service (QoS) metrics, such as queueing delay cannot be completely addressed by these approaches. Moreover, without a formalized service differentiation goal that quantifies the outco...
متن کاملImpact of the Transmission Scheme on the Performance in Wireless LANs
In wireless LANs, different multi-user access methods such as TDMA, OFDMA and SDMA are available which can be used with or without channel knowledge at the transmitter and a single antenna (MISO) or multiple antennas (MIMO) at the receiver. A cross-layer scheduler is considered which can be configured with these different PHY methods as well as with knowledge about application requirements and ...

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the de facto standard for wireless LANs, and has also been implemented in many network simulation packages for wireless multi-hop ad hoc networks. However, it is well known that, as the number of active stations increases, the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC in terms of delay and throughput degrades dramatically, especially when each station’s load approaches to its s...

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol has been the standard for Wireless LANs, and also adopted in many network simulation packages for wireless multi-hop ad hoc networks. However, it is well known that, as the traffic goes up, the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC drops dramatically in terms of delay and throughput, especially when the station approaches its saturation state. To explore the inherent problems ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Finite Population on IEEE802.11 Wireless LANs Throughput/Delay Performance
The theoretical performance of CSMA/CA, as it is used in IEEE802.11 wireless LANs, is investigated in this paper. We adopt and modify a previously presented analytical approach for CSMA/CA protocols in wireless LANs with finite number of stations and find closed-form equations for throughput and delay. The presented numerical results highlight the characteristics of both CSMA/CA methods and def...
